About Me

As the music education specialist for the Faculty, I oversee all aspects of the music education program and teach music education courses in curriculum and instruction, secondary music methods, and brass methods, and supervise and mentor pre-service teachers. In addition, I teach core courses in Professional Semester I. Previously, I also served as Assistant Dean, Field Experiences.

Biography

Prior to joining the Faculty of Education at the University of Lethbridge in 1999, I taught music as well as a variety of other subjects at the middle school/junior high, senior high, and undergraduate levels. I also worked as a curriculum developer for Saskatchewan Education in the early 1990s.

Along the way, I have earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree with a specialization in Instrumental Music Education (Arizona State University), a Master of Education degree (University of Victoria), a graduate Diploma of Fine Arts in Music with a specialization in wind conducting (University of Calgary), and Bachelor of Music Education (University of Regina).

Over the years, I've served on the boards of directors for several professional associations. I am a Past President of the Canadian Music Educators' Association, the Saskatchewan Band Association, and the Lethbridge Jazz Society.

Research Interests

My research and creative activity focuses on various aspects of Canadian music education, including historical topics, cross-cultural collaboration, curriculum and instruction, music teacher education, and instrumental ensemble performance. From 1999 to 2008 I also worked in the U of L Music Dept. as Director of Jazz Activities. I regularly adjudicate music festivals, give clinics and workshops, and present and publish my research locally, provincially, nationally and internationally. I continue to perform as a musician in the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra and the Lethbridge Big Band. Some of my research can be read in the following publications:
